Engine and technical problems:
Increased oil consumption - especially on EJ20 and EJ25 engines, especially with aggressive driving.
Engine overheating - more common on versions with EJ25 engine due to problems with the cylinder head gasket.
Timing belt wear - it is important to change the timing belt every 90,000-100,000 km, otherwise it may break and damage the valves.
Detonation and octane problems - turbocharged versions are sensitive to fuel quality.
Ignition coil failure - often occurs on naturally aspirated versions.
Transmission:
Worn synchronizers in manual transmission - especially in 2nd and 3rd gear, due to aggressive driving.
Problems with automatic transmission (4EAT) - jolts are possible when shifting, especially with insufficient oil or contamination.
Worn viscous coupling of the central differential - manifested by slippage or jerks when turning.
Suspension and steering:
Rapid wear of stabilizer struts and silent blocks - especially when driving on bad roads.
Corrosion of the rear arms and subframe - a problem in regions with severe winters and reagents on the roads.
Body and electrics:
Corrosion of the body - especially arches, thresholds, bottom and rear subframe mounts.
Electrical failures - problems with ground, weak contacts in headlights and taillights.
Failure of window lift motors - often observed in older cars.
Conclusion:
Despite these problems, the first generation Subaru Impreza is a reliable car with proper care. Most malfunctions can be prevented by regular maintenance, use of high-quality spare parts and timely diagnostics.
