Subaru Outback III BP/BL Main Problems

🔧 Engine (EJ25, EZ30)

🛠 Problems with cylinder head gaskets (EJ25 SOHC/DOHC)

A typical 2.5L EJ25 malfunction is coolant leaks through the cylinder head gaskets.

Symptoms: overheating, antifreeze smell, bubbles in the expansion tank.

Solution: replace the gaskets with reinforced ones + check the plane of the block and cylinder head.

🛠 Oil consumption (EZ30 H6 and EJ25 DOHC)

The engines may consume oil (especially after 150 thousand km).

Causes: wear of oil scraper rings, poor crankcase ventilation.

Solution: decoking of the rings or engine overhaul.

🛠 Problems with AVCS phase shifters (EJ25 DOHC)

Symptoms: knocking when starting, errors in the VVT system.

Cause: clogged oil channels.

Solution: change oil every 7-8 thousand km, flush the system.

⚙️ Transmission (manual, automatic, VTD, VDC)

🛠 Problems with the 5EAT automatic transmission

Symptoms: shocks when shifting, gear lag.

Cause: solenoids wear, valve body contamination.

Solution: change automatic transmission oil and filter every 40-50 thousand km.

🛠 Jerking and noise in the transfer case

The problem occurs on AWD versions with automatic transmission.

Cause: wear of the center differential clutch.

Solution: replace solenoids and clutch discs.

🛠 Front wheel hub bearings

Often fail after 100-150 thousand km.

Symptoms: hum, vibration.

Solution: replace bearings.

🚗 Suspension and steering

🛠 Worn out front arm silent blocks

Symptoms: knocking, poor handling.

Solution: replace with polyurethane or reinforced analogs.

🛠 Steering rack problems

Symptoms: knocking, power steering fluid leak.

Solution: repair or replace the steering rack.

⚡️ Electrics

🛠 Climate control is glitching

The problem is related to the failure of the damper drive.

🛠 Generator malfunctions

May not provide stable voltage after 150 thousand km.

🛠 Problems with the central lock and window lifters

Reason: oxidation of contacts and wear of motors.

🔩 Body and corrosion

🛠 Rust on the rear arches and sills

Especially relevant for cars from snowy regions.

Solution: anti-corrosion treatment.

🛠 Paint peeling off the doors and hood
