Subaru Legacy 5th generation Main problems

1. Engine and its problems

🔹 Oil consumption (especially on 2.5i EJ253 and EJ255)

The engine may consume oil above the norm due to wear of the piston rings.

It is recommended to regularly check the oil level and change it every 5,000-7,000 km.

🔹 Cooling system problems

The radiator may leak, especially in cars with a mileage of more than 150,000 km.

The thermostat and water pump may fail, causing the engine to overheat.

🔹 EZ36 chain engine (3.6R)

Reliable, but requires high-quality oil and regular maintenance.

The chain tensioner may wear out with high mileage.

2. Transmission

🔹 Problems with the CVT (Lineartronic TR690)

Worn valve body, delays in gear shifting.

Overheating is possible during active driving or towing.

It is recommended to change the oil in the CVT every 40,000–50,000 km, although the manufacturer states a longer interval.

🔹 Manual and automatic transmission (5EAT)

The 6-speed manual is quite reliable, but the clutch wears out quickly during aggressive driving.

The 5-speed automatic (5EAT) is stable, but requires oil changes every 60,000 km.

3. Electrics and sensors

🔹 Engine sensor malfunctions

Crankshaft and camshaft position sensor (errors P0335, P0340).

Mass air flow sensor (MAF), due to which the engine may triple.

🔹 Door wiring problems

Over time, wiring harnesses may break at the bending points (for example, in the driver's door).

🔹 Multimedia system failure

The head unit may freeze or stop working completely.

There may be problems with the rear view camera.

4. Chassis and steering

🔹 Rapid wear of the rear silent blocks of the front arms

They may crack already at 80,000–100,000 km.

It is advisable to replace them with reinforced analogs.

🔹 Steering mechanism

There may be play in the steering rack after 120,000 km.

In the cold season, the steering rack may creak.

🔹 Suspension

Shock absorbers do not always withstand bad roads, especially the rear ones.

The front stabilizer struts may start knocking after 50,000–70,000 km.

5. Corrosion and body

🔹 Weak anti-corrosion protection

The bottom and sills can rust, especially in regions with aggressive reagents.

The paintwork is soft, chips and scratches appear.
