1. Wiring and contact problems
🔹 Contact oxidation – especially in connectors located in the engine compartment and under the bottom.
🔹 Broken wiring in the door corrugation – leads to non-working power windows, central locking, mirrors.
🔹 Wire harness chafing – insulation may be damaged due to vibration and age, causing short circuits.
2. Generator and battery charging problems
🔹 Generator diode bridge burnout – often leads to battery discharge or voltage surges.
🔹 Engine and body ground problems – weak or oxidized contacts can cause voltage drop, unstable electronics operation.
🔹 Generator overheating – due to high load, especially when connecting additional electronics.
3. Starter malfunctions
🔹 Sticking solenoid relay – the car may not start or the starter will “click”.
🔹 Wear of starter brushes – leads to difficulty starting the engine.
4. Lighting problems
🔹 Burnt out low/high beam bulbs – due to old wiring or generator.
🔹 Blown fuses – often associated with a short circuit.
🔹 Headlight problems – oxidation of connectors, burnt out bulbs, relay failure.
4. Electronics and sensor problems
🔹 Failure of the crankshaft sensor (CKP) or camshaft – leads to difficulties with starting the engine or its unstable operation.
🔹 Throttle position sensor (TPS) glitches – the car starts to jerk or holds the speed unstably.
🔹 Malfunction of ABS sensors - the "ABS" lamp lights up on the panel, ABS stops working.
5. Problems with the dashboard and buttons
🔹 The dashboard sometimes blinks or does not show some readings - due to poor contacts in the connectors.
🔹 Malfunction of the window lift and central lock buttons - due to poor contacts or oxidation.
🔹 Malfunction of the radio and speakers - wire breaks, poor contacts.
How to avoid problems with wiring on a Subaru Legacy II (1993-1999)?
✅ Check the condition of the generator and battery terminals.
✅ Clean and lubricate the contacts (especially in the fuse and relay box).
✅ Check the wiring harnesses for damage.
✅ Use high-quality fuses and bulbs - cheap analogs often burn out.
✅ Conduct diagnostics of electrical equipment once a year.
